In a world of constant change, how do we build something rooted? Here’s what identity work in business actually means now.

We’re living in a time where identity is constantly in flux. We’re encouraged to evolve, grow, rebrand, and adapt. But with every shift comes a new question: Who am I building this for now?
In the past, identity was handed to us; by class, culture, family. We didn’t choose who we were; we just lived within the shape of it.
But in the modern world, especially in creative entrepreneurship, identity has become something we have to construct and constantly perform; and that comes with pressure.
To “show up.”
To pick a niche.
To have a brand voice.
To position yourself in a way that lands.
So we start borrowing.
A little from mentors, a little from the algorithm and a little from what we think works, and without realising, the business stops feeling like an expression and starts feeling like a costume.
The Psychology of It:
Psychologically, identity exists in tension:
Between self-expression and belonging.
Between safety and autonomy.
Between who we were told to be, and who we’re becoming.
When we don’t pause to explore that tension, we build brands on top of unexamined foundations. That’s why strategy alone isn’t enough. Because you can’t build clarity on top of confusion.
The Sociological Shift:
We’re in an era where identity is more fragmented than ever. Globalisation, social media, cultural displacement, post-capitalist pressure to “be your brand”; it’s psychologically disorienting.
We’ve turned identity into a product, and that makes it harder to connect to the part of you that isn’t trying to perform.
So What Does Identity Work in Business Look Like?
It’s a process of:
Naming the shaping forces that brought you here.
Choosing what you’re keeping and what you’re discarding.
Building a business that reflects who you are now, not who you had to be.
Using my Identity Extraction Framework, we untangle the cultural, psychological and structural distractions that’s been driving the business decisions you didn’t realise were emotional.
Then, we build something deliberate, strategic and true to your core identity. Evolution means having the tools to stay rooted; even while you grow.
